La Callas
Wiped screen print on paper
18" x 24"
Varied edition of 6
May 2025
La Callas is a hand-pulled screen print of opera legend Maria Callas, part of my Wiped: Voices in Fragment series. Printed in black and white with red lips, each piece in this varied edition of 6 is uniquely altered—dry-brushed by hand, intentionally smudged, and partially undone.
Traditionally, screen printing demands precision and control. This series resists that. Here, I invite in imperfection—allowing texture, gesture, and loss to surface. As I wiped each print, the shifting brush strokes softened her face, amplifying a haunted stillness. It brought to mind the silent film era, when actresses conveyed emotion without sound—an apt parallel for Callas, whose voice made her immortal, and whose silence later became just as iconic.
Wiped explores the nature of memory: how voices linger, fade, and fracture over time. Even the most powerful stories eventually blur.
