Heidi Phelps

My paintings explore narratives of women from life and lore—finding magic in ordinary moments, and everyday truths in myths and legends.Through painting, screen printing and mixed media compositions, I immerse myself in an interplay of black and white, occasionally punctuated by deliberate bursts of color. The result is a seemingly minimalist aesthetic—but the simplicity is deceptive. All of my pieces require a careful consideration of positive and negative space, intricate linework, and an intentional approach to composition. Using this seemingly simple approach to depicting women’s stories, I offer a subtle commentary on the undervaluation of "women's work" throughout history. In this way, I aim to shed light on the essential yet often overlooked contributions of women to sustaining life, community, and livelihood.
